Can someone recommend a flash for the Sony Nex-7?
Will I need a hot shoe adaptor?

I had a NEX 7 and a NEX 5. One needed an adaptor, and the other didn't. I forget which. Nissin (Japan) and Yongnuo (China) make good flashes that are reasonably priced.

The NEX 5 used the Minolta hot shoe. The NEX 7 uses a standard ISO hot shoe and will only need an adapter if you try to use a Minolta hot shoe flash gun.
You can use any flash gun with a standard ISO hot shoe with the NEX 7.
Thank you. This was very helpful

Fran, the NEX 7 is kinda small, so I would look at flash guns with a smaller/lighter profile and high enough guide number to suit your purposes.
Sony makes good flashes... but they are expensive, on par with Canon and Nikon prices.
As suggested earlier, Nissin and Yongnuo sell decent to very good flash guns for reasonable prices. If money is no problem, then check into Metz and Phottix.
GOOD LUCK!

Yes on the adaptor. They are cheap.

The NEX 7 does not have the standard shoe. You need an adaptor for standard flashes.

I stand corrected. You are right.
You WILL need an adaptor to use any non Minolta hot shoe flash guns with the NEX 7.
Fortunately, they are not that expensive.
A long time ago Vivitar was well known for reasonsble quality low price camera accesories. Recent reviews suggest not so much any more.
My Nikon SB 700 worked fine on my NEX 7 with adapter. If price is concern the Neewer flash is a good buy. I see one on Amazon for the NEX7.
I have been using a Nissan i40 flash on My Sony 6000,no adapter needed and getting good results

The NEX 7 was the generation before the A6000 and still used the Minolta Hot Shoe.
