nikon 7000 flash warranty issue

I purchased this camera in May it is under full warranty. I am extremely careful when ever I use the camera. I took it out the other day to take a picture in my back yard and the flash would not pop up. I tried different settings to make sure I had not turned something off and it would still not work. I filled out the paperwork and sent it to Nikon. I received an email stating that the camera was under warranty and that it would be repaired. 10 days later I get another email saying that the camera had a bent bayonet and that the new repair estimate is $230. I am not sure what to make of this. Are these cameras so fragile that normal use would cause this problem. The camera has 1725 clicks on it and has never been dropped. For that matter it has never left my house other than my back yard. Am I being played here or does this sound legit? I really have no choice I supposed they have my camera . Thanks for any feed back.

Decline the repair & buy an external flash, or just not take flash pictures.

At the very least ask for an explanation why it's not covered by the warranty.

Good luck

This camera has been out of production for awhile. It was replaced by the D7100 & then the D7200. Was it purchased used or refurbished ?.

Can not specifically answer, except I have D7000 with 30,000 clicks, use the cameras built in flash, plus an external speedlight, SB700 and have never had any problem. Bought the 7000 in May, 2012. Just bought a new D7200, and WOW.

Many other photographers also have many shutter activations with no issues
Probably with and without internal flash usage.

My opinion, camera defect, should be under warrantee.hope this helps.

I'd call them and ask them if they mixed you up with someone else. I don't get what bayonet they are referring to that would stop the internal flash from popping up.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I did buy the camera new. It is under full warranty. I took the advice to call them and did not have a pleasant experience with the first person that I talked to. She told me that the front cover of the camera was cracked and that the bayonet on the lens mount was bent. I explained to her that the camera was not damage like that when it left my house etc. and that if it were damaged now that it happened while in their care. She was not pleasant nor helpful. After several requests to speak to her supervisor she finally put me through to him. He had a completely different attitude and told me that he would get back to me. He was going to request pictures of the damage and then get in touch. With in a couple of hours he sent an email with a picture attached. The camera that is in the picture looks like someone smacked it with a hammer. The front cover is nearly broken in half above the lens mount. They are fixing the camera with out charge. I am not sure what happened but as long as they fix the camera I will be satisfied.

you in the west, so you must be talking to the repair shop on that side of the country. I will bet, that the lady who picks up the phone in the Nikon repair shop in Long Island, NY has a twin sister and she works in the West store. Have had several conversations with her over different problems. She is very bad. Was going to use the b word but thought I would get in trouble.

Glad that workrd out for you. Seems to be shipping damage.

One lesson is to be sure to insure when shipping. Although I could imagine a dispute there as well. Who is to say someone didn't ship a damaged item to get the insurance? And I have heard where the insurer claims poor packing by the shipper.

For those reasons I'm a little suspicious they agreed to fix it. There may have been a hint that they dropped it.

In any case all is well that ends well.

"Bent bayonet" is not a very good explanation.

One year after a Nikon product goes out of production and is no longer on the official Nikon equipment list it is no longer a Nikon product. Depending on the purchase date it probably is no longer recognized as a new product by the manufacturer. Look, if a product was last produced in 2010 and you bought that product in 2015, how could you expect any company to honor it as new for a one year warranty?

billnikon, the camera was new when I bought it. It came with a warranty. The fact that it was not sold in 2010 is not even a factor. There was no question from Nikon that the camera is under warranty. The problem was with the claim that the camera was damaged by impact when not only was it not sent in for that issue but it was not damaged by impact.

I am not sure I would accept a repaired camera after it looked like it it was smacked with a hammer. Are they sure that camera is yours? who knows what other problems it may have. Did they explain to you how it got damaged? if it came that way then someone at ups screwed up and they owe you a new camera.

Is this the first time you tried to use the flash? Has it worked in the past? I didn't know cameras had bayonets.

My experience with Nikon on cameras and binoculars is that they will come up with any kind of story to try and get out of providing warranty service. If it's still under warranty I would take it back to where I bought and ask for a replacement and let them deal with the company. A reputable firm that wants to keep you as a customer should have no problem with that.
