The Roebling Bridge, in the Catskill region of New York, is the oldest suspension bridge in the United States. It was constructed in 1847, designed by John Roebling (who later went on to design the Brooklyn Bridge).

Amazing. How long it has lasted. Great Craftsmen in those days. We recently built a state of the Art suspension bridge here in San Diego. Only $15,000,000. It only goes from a hotel to our Base Ball Park'. The Bear

It was of course renovated a few times. Thanks for commenting!

I've always understood that a "Suspension Bridge" was suspended on cables stretched between two tall towers. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is a prime example. This one seems to be some form of a Truss Bridge. Am I missing something here? ...... Coot

Most of the modern bridges today have vertical suspenders. Simple suspension bridges, like this one, are usually constructed in mountainous regions. I guess these suspenders are horizontal.

Thank you BassmanBruce. This bridge was originally an aqueduct, converted to a vehicle bridge. It is single lane. I didn't post the photo showing the single lane. Thanks for looking.

$15,000,000? Wow! You can't get anything built for $15 Mln.

Hope it's not like the Coronado(?) Bridge. The turn in the middle scares me.

Thank you Indi. I appreciate the comment. It is the Delaware River connecting New York and Pennsylvania.

This explains it better (a link from the previous wikipedia link). Includes a photo before restoration where the cables can clearly be seen.

Sorry, but I don't think that is a suspension bridge. The whole idea of one is to eliminate the need for in the river abutments which this bridge has an abundance of.
Roebling did build a wonderful suspension bridge in Cincinnati across the Ohio river to Kentucky around 1856 . His next bridge was the East River bridge. The construction of it caused the death of Johann and was then directed by his son Washington. He oversaw the construction until becoming bedridden from the bends caused from the improper decompression from working in a high air pressure environment. His wife then took the responsibility of acting director and intermediary to the construction team.
David McCullough wrote 'The Great Bridge' and it is a fascinating account of the 'Brooklyn' bridge. A very good read.
