What is recommended as a good telephoto lens for a D-5300. I want auto focus not extremely telephoto. I am hearing something around a 18-300 Nikkor?

That is a good lens, the earlier "F5.6" version is a bit better than the current "F6.3" model.
Also take a look at the Sigma 18-300mm and Tamron 16-300mm lenses, both are quite good at their price point.

The Tamron 70-300 VC gets very good reviews and I have used one on Canon. Large ratio zooms have their worst performance at 300mm.

I have the Nikon 18-300 3.5-5.6 (the older and better version) and it has been a serviceable lens. I used it on my d5100 and took lots of nice pictures on a trip through Germany. As MT Shooter says, it is soft at the long end, and as with any lens with this much range, there are image quality tradeoffs. However, if you want one lens to carry around, it is a good one that you will enjoy using.

I agree with Nukepr. Have the "old" Nikon 18-300 originally on my 5100 now on my D7200. Rarely do I need to use something else.
