Do you have a smart phone & with you at the shoot? Use the phone's flash light. Or the light from the screen. Or the lihgt from the screen of a 'dumb' phone. Or the light from a Timex Indiglo phone.

Good shot!

Thanks, I did learn from this post that a slight turn to the right on the on/off switch would turn on the top light. As long as I have been shooting I should have realized that but I up to now have never shot at night. Strange how long it takes to teach an old dog a new trick. Leon.

2nd try to post. This weekend I had the opportunity to shoot a fund raiser event and was asked by the singer to shoot a few shots for him to use on his next poster or dvd. Most of the event had to be shot with flash because it was outdoor and at night. I decided to test the D810 with Nikon 17-35 f2.8 in his tent with only a couple of colored lights alternating in color. I took the posted shot at f6.3, 1/10 second, iso 12,500 @26mm pm , on monopod. I could have closed the f stop more, but wanted to include the flag to be sharp. I learned that you can't see the settings on the top of the camera in the dark and that in the future I would have a small flash light along. Thought this might be of interest to some UHHers. Leon

Don't you have a button to light up the top LCD? If that's not available, you should be able to see everything in the viewfinder anyway! Or you can display all your settings on the back LCD!

Thanks for the ideas but GoofyNewfie's answer was right on the money. However the problems in the dark with the unlite buttons still remains. I don't normally use the screen but am very accustomed to changing settings on the fly with the outside controls. If you are used to using a D3000 series and I think the D5000 series your accustomed to having to use the screen. I'm not and don't intend to use it much on a shoot. That's why I have owned only the semi pro cameras like the D700 and D810. But thanks for your suggestions. Leon. Enjoy your day.
