My son was talking to a friend, and the friend mentioned that his computers are Macs. Expanding on that, he said he has 2 iMacs, 2 MacBook Pros, iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV.

The problem with Apple products is that they don't wear out or break down! (In my experience) I am just now getting a new iMac to replace my 2006 iMac. The old one still works but can't be upgraded to new and better operating systems and programs. If I still did the same things as I did 9 years ago it would still be fine! It is hard for me to justify getting rid of something that isn't broken but it is time.

I have a 9500 I bought in the 90's that was on 24/7 for nearly 10 years,... I keep it to run an expensive ($1700) UMAX scanner because UMAX refused to release OSX drivers- so it still runs an older Apple 9 operating system. I don't scan many chromes anymore- kinda need the space- been eyeing it. I have 2 G4's that have hard drives in them that work fine, and two G5's - my main computers. Note that they all network together and I can still go into my old 9500 and get files and or scans... hard to throw something away that runs as good as day one... Meanwhile, in the basement, I have a half dozen empty hulks of windows machines, with guts removed and piles of proprietary power supplies and ram, mother boards.. looks like the Jawa sandcrawler galley... they're slated for the recycling center... sadly the 20 year old 9500 may go with it.
Then I have to listen to windows advocates tell me how much better that platform is then "Apple junk"... But they'll probably vote for Hillary too using the same logic. (not to hijack the thread LOL)

Ignoring your last paragraph... we don't want this Topic to end up in the Attic...
Have you looked into SilverFast software? They produce drivers for many different scanners and printers (including UMAX) that allow them to continue to work on the latest PC and Mac systems.
Also, Umax offers an upgrade service and/or trade-in program for their older scanners.
