It was so foggy yesterday over the river...these birds emerged from it. This morning the sky was on fire...but when I got there I realized I left the camera card in the computer...have not done that in a long while......

which way do we go

Rather nice RiverNan. Good capture in difficult conditions.
Could do without the intrusive watermark would be my only criticism.
Hope all is well with you

Great composition! That is a very difficult shot to get and not only takes skill but a bit of luck also. Is there a way you could play with the contrast, highlights, lowlights, etc.,make it pop a little? I seems just a little flat to me.

Holy Crap Billy...is that the only criticism I'm gonna get from you? yes all is well except my blunder this morning when the sky was soooo sooo beautiful and the card was in the computer...duh

Lynette...which image are you referring to
I didn't play much with either one so I suppose there is room for improvement...Yes Luck in being there when the birds took flight...heard them first...trained the camera in the direction of their voice...no time to change settings...just refocus as they came toward me and then right by me.

Always the voice of truth and reason! Praise where praise is due and snorts of derision for the pretentious.

The first one, which in my opinion is the best of the two. Don't cut yourself short, not many photographers can take such good advantage of a situation. You have to have an eye for that sort of thing.

Hi, Nan,
I like both of these. They both challenge the viewer to extract reason out of an initial sense of imbalance...of the irrational.
Congrats!

I prefer your first image because the birds are nicely silhouetted against a common background. In number 2, it's almost as if they're crossing a border and my eye doesn't know whether to adjust for dark on light or light on dark.

From an artistic point of few, number 1 also appeals to me. I think of this as "flight on hushed wings".

And you're not the only one who has left the card behind while running out the door with camera. One of my cameras will actually shoot 4 or 5 photos on internal memory. It's not enough, but better than nothing. My creative juices don't usually get flowing freely until the 8th or 9th shot. And in those instances, I shrug and accept that the gods were not smiling on me that day. On the other hand, they gave me a good memory to remember what I missed.

I like the first one better too...just one set of birds..
in the second one the birds I was tracking were going upstream...but I caught I few flying downstream (in the middle) as well. I did already make one bird go away...so lets see if I can get something a little better out of the first one.

Is this what you mean Magicfad

Both are nice, but I prefer the first. I think it has a lot of potential because of the rhythmic lines in the image - birds, horizon, clouds. There's a bunch you can do with it, and don't be reluctant to try a lot of creative crops. It should be a great image to be creative with, both in color and in monochrome if you decide to try it.

I bet it'll be a long time before you rush out with no card in the camera again! (I did something similar one day on my trip, left with no battery.)

Hey Minnie...Yes I have been playing with a bunch of the ones I was able to snap off yesterday..and you are soooooo right...I went crop crazy yesterday but as it goes...I like the original composition best with the lagging birds...left them alone in this last rendition...
and Bob...I feel like there should be enough memory for a few pics without card, but I have no idea how to retrieve them. Guess Ill have to wait for another morning of color to run out and try again.

Clone out the tail-end Charlie in #1. Getting the shot right in your fleeting window of opportunity isn't half as easy as some might think  .

Ya..thanks R.G. that was the first thing I did was remove the two birds lagging behind...then let one stay..:-)
You can see both birds all kind of crooked in the third pic posted..

This is a favorite from that morning...cropped & color play

Still have one more to play with...

Nice shots I like the second one better. To me looks a little "crisper". Don't ever forget your card again. Lol . On the other hand if you did have it in your camera it would have been raining :)
