I am taking family portraits for a family of 15, they have changed their location from outside pictures, to inside a pole barn. I'm wondering about lighting for the pictures. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

You did not mention time of time of day, if outside light will be avaiable through windows or doors, what lens you will be using, what lighting there is in the building or why or how hard set they are on this location.

Sorry that would be helpful, it will be around 1pm but its supposed to rain. So I am assuming cloudy overcast. There are no windows in the pole barn.

I will be using my Nikon AF-S 18-55mm and they are set on the location.

No information as to lighting within the building. First guess is to open all of the doors - even on a cloudy day you may be surprised as to light gained. Very likely your falsh will not be enough for a large group unless you have a good hot shoe flash or can bring out some lamps. The side lighting may well be an advantge either way. Watch your white balance setting. May need a higher ISO setting - 400, may be a place to start. I would not want to go any higher. Shoot with the widest apature you have and use a tripod. There are other suggestions but these may be some to start with some test shoots before all are in place.

If they have lighting in the pole barn (electricity) then you could use some lights on stands if needed besides the overhead lighting and also use your flash. If no electricy in the building, then a generator may be needed to power some lights for nice lighting depending on the size of building and everything.

this may seem an odd piece of advice...but having shot many pictures in a horse training barn...take a look at whats on the floor...wood shavings?...dirt?...because shooting with a flash or lights...if it gets stir up...even a touch...your lighting (especially your flash) will make it look like it is snowing...

If you have any concerns...wet it down a little...

Thanks everyone for all the advice...sorry about some of the limited details about the location, I am getting ready to head to the location tonight and take some test shots. So I will probably be posting later for more advice.

Thanks
Angela

Ok guys here is the pole barn and the location spot these are my tests shots...granted all the clutter will be removed from area but just wanted to get an idea of what I was working with.

This pole barn is a all open front which will be in front of my subjects so I am hoping for light from there even though it will be a over cast day....I am thinking light boxes on either side to focus more light on all 16 of the people I will be putting into this area.

1. shot was with my nikon lenses AF-SDX 55-200mm at 55 f/4 iso 200

2. 18-55mm lense at 50mm f/5.6 iso 400

3. 18-55mm lense at 44mm f/5.3 iso 200

Hope this helps and clears a few things up

Thanks so much everyone!

This helps to see what you will be shooting in. Maybe you or they could hang some covers or sheets to hide the clutter so you have a cleaner area / backdrop for the photos so they will look a lot nicer. I like your extra lighting idea as that should help in a darker building like that. I just shot some photos not too long ago in a pole building that had limited light. Luckily, I had someone bring in a generator and lights for me so I was able to get the photos.

Thanks....let me see if I can get across what they are wanting...they collect old antiques signs, old gas station stuff...etc...they like the galvanized steel background..and by saturday the back wall will have old the rustic signs hanging including their an old sign of their last name from a family mechanic shop...my hopes are to put them together half sitting and the rest standing behind them..I am in luck the barn has electricity but the lights are to high up I think for good lighting on them. They are going for a rustic look. We will see how it turns out...gotta love a challenge!!

i may be completely off base here but have you considered hdr? i'm not even sure if that's a viable solution & i've never done hdr but it is supposed to give wider range, isn't it? just a thought.

I'm confused. Why is pic #3, at ISO 200 brighter than pic #2, at ISO 400?

Hmmm...is it really impossible to get outside for one shot between rains?

This seems like a weird background for a family shot...(shed clutter) and I can't believe that a tree and bushes would be worse for a background. :(

What does the meter read in the shed with all of the doors open on a cloudy day?

The answer to that will tell you what you need to do.
