Yes, I remember very well! We had one (in the '50's). After school one day, my sister hurt her finger. My mother worked so I had to call her. However, our party line was busy with the woman down the street chit-chatting what seemed like forever. My sister's hurting, so I finally broke in and asked if she would please hang up because my sister was hurt and I had to call my mother. The woman grumbled but hung up.
Later that afternoon, after my mother got home and helped my sister, that woman approached her about how rude I was over the phone. I was so proud - my mom told that woman if she wasn't on the phone so long, she would never have been interrupted! Yayyyy, Mom!

One day when I was nine I was home alone sick and could not get on the line to call my mother at work. The busy body lady called the operator and when I told her the lady would not get off the line she checked and called me back and told me to make my call she had talked to the busy body. I couldn't believe it. - Dave

Mine was 25727 in the 1950's. Then when they added the "Exchanges" it went to DI ( DIAMOND) 25727. This was for my area. DU (DUPONT) was for Salem Va. EM (EMPIRE) was for Roanoke City.

Yea, and as much as they would try to hide it, you could always tell when someone picked up their phone. I remember when i was around 10 years old, we had a really nosy neighbor that ALWAYS listened in.

This was a party line prank
One day in the 50's a friend called me and we talked a bit and I told him that my teenage sister was pregnant. (she wasn't). Well it didn't take long for someone to mention it to my mother and I was in deep trouble for while. MY sister doesn't think it was funny to this day.

Our phone number was EMerson 84728. Why is it we remember our phone numbers so long ago, but now I always have to stop and think for a moment to remember my cell number?
