Olympus Viewer 3 problems- inaccessible files

I have been using Viewer 3 for a couple of years: for a TG2, latterly also for an OMDM5-2.
Every now and then, a file becomes heavily pixellated with a white arrowed circle superimosed, with an cross in the middle. The file is then irretrievable.
The problem worsened when I tried to import a set of Olympus files into Lightroom. In the LR catlog, there is a question mark over each would-be imported file, which is ghosted out. If I click on 'Find missing folder', it gives me, 'No items match your search'. I have been able to import virtually nothing from Viewer 3, though as much as I want from Canon.
The pictures are thus visible but pixellated and inaccessible in Viewer 3, and invisible to and un-importable into Lightroom. So they have effectively disappeared.
I also have Picasa. All the inaccessible files are present and correct in Picasa, and if I click 'Locate on disk', it of course refers me to Viewer 3, where the picture is not only visible and unspoiled, but can also be copied and pasted!
Can anyone please tell me, in incredibly simple language as if speaking to a rather dim child, why files that Viewer 3 has made unobtainable, and LR cannot find, are (fortunately) still alive and well via Picasa? How can I restore them to Viewer 3 where they belong? How did they get spoiled in the first place?
I cannot blame this on the computer, because I store files on two computers, and I have had the same problem with both. Only one has LR, so I don't think you can blame LR.
Please bear with me if I do not acknowdge your replies very quickly: my work can keep me away from a computer for more than a day at a time. But I shall be so grateful for any advice on restoring 'lost' pictures and avoiding the problem in future. Thank you.

My immediate suggestion would be to dump the Olympus Viewer 3, reviews are not good, and try something like the Faststone Image Viewer for basic viewing and light editing, but that is not what you are asking.
I'm a fanatic about manually moving and storing files myself so I know exactly where they are located (and backing them up!). Any of these programs that import photos to albums are only creating additional pointers to files, not moving copies.
It sounds to me that either the file path to the original has been altered in some way or there are file permission issues and that is why the program cannot pull it up. Try first using the operating system search (I do not know which you are using) and finding out exactly where on your computer the files are located. If they are not on your computer, if you are storing them on your camera or in the "cloud", then it is highly likely that the file path has changed and Olympus Viewer 3 is looking in the wrong place.

The world is full of mis-understandings, and I it looks as though this Olympus software is also misunderstood.

I don't have this program but having read up on it, Olympus Viewer 3 does NOT import your photographs. The software looks at each file "imported", creates a copy which it puts into an album. That is what you are looking at, not the original file. Lightroom realises this, and does not import because the actual photograph is not at the location pointed to. Picasa, which is an automatic browser, appears to be finding the originals, but for some reason is pointing to OV3.

To prove me right or wrong:

Search the computer for any of the files names and find the true location of the images. Then point Lightroom to that location for the import.

There are so many flows in Olympus Viewer 3 that I have stopped using it. Many of its functions I do not like them at all like exporting all the files to a folder in the desktop and many of its functions are slow to execute or come short in their results. To me cropping has never been successful and I stopped using it for RAW files because the selections are too limited.
I have been using their excellent JPEGs and going straight to Photoshop with far better and easier to accomplish results.

Grateful thanks to all three of you. I'll follow your lead(s).
