My Daughter-in-Law hired a professional photographer to photograph my G-daughters, Lily and Melody. She selected 10 shots out of aprox. 50 and paid just under 300.00 for a CD with the Jpeg's on it. I asked her to contact the photographer ad ask if she could have the RAW files as well. The photographer responded that she only shot Jpegs. (She shoots with a Canon 6D) Is this common? Is 300.00 bucks for a 10 shot CD reasonable? Also the contract my D-in-Law signed indicated that the images may not be modified in any way. Is this common practice?

Others will know better than I, but I am guessing that the photographer assumes that the originals are her copyright, and that she keeps the originals, just as in the old days most photographers would keep the negatives and supply prints to the client.

I'll be watching with interest for more informed responses...

I wonder if she shot RAW but will only give up jpegs. I would think a "pro" would shoot RAW.

We hired a pro to shoot our youngest granddaughter in a several themes for her 1st birthday. We've had this done for each of 7 grandchildren by pro's who live near them. This time the photographer, who works from a home studio, called at the last minute with sick children. She offered to bring her backgrounds, props and lighting to us, which she did. She shot four different themes, allowed me to make edits to the proof we wanted for the wall hanger, and gave us all the files via web site download, about 30 shots, and charged us less than you paid. I thought it strange she only shot JPEG but I highly recommend her work. If you are ever in the market for a photographer in Columbia, SC her name is Katie English.

I shoot mostly studio business portraits, and I often shoot JPEGs. I shoot tethered and the files download faster for clients to view and I have the exposure and white balance dialed in, so the only post processing is usually retouching. The photos are usually used for the web or printed somewhat small in publications. When I do shoot RAW, usually in tricky lighting situations or using on-camera flash, I won't supply RAW files to clients. I think $30 each for hi-res files is reasonable.

Now-a-day what do you expect?

Even in this site where we are supposed to be all about quality and stuff we see many folks who claim to be pros yet refuse to use raw, worse PP their JPG capture to death and post what I would like to call **** on their web site... and get positive comments!!!

Anything goes and as long as there is a sucker there will be unprofessional, unethical folks.

As to the use of JPG comments...

Specialties like sport photography, journalism, wildlife photographers use JPG as it allows for burst of captures to catch the optimal frame. I do not see the problem even if I think that in most cases one needs a very short burst that can be done in raw but that is an opinion.

Portrait, wedding, fine art must be shot in raw to realize the full potential of camera sensor. Short of that the photographer is, well, a crook.

Then we wonder why the public reasons 'I can do that too!!!'... Well... They can.

Is 300.00 bucks for a 10 shot CD reasonable? Yes, your daughter in law (DIL) signed a contract.
the contract my D-in-Law signed indicated that the images may not be modified in any way. Is this common practice? Yes, once again your DIL signed a contract.

This is always buyer beware for everything. If your DIL did not do her homework there is nothing she or you can complain about.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully you won't mind answering one more question. The files are around 4 megs. My D-in-law had requested files that could print 20x24. Is a 4 meg. file from a Canon 6D capable of a quality print at this size?

Appreciate you taking time to reply.... Seems like Weddings (or at least some I've been to) could be like shooting a 'sporting' event where jpegs might be in order.... :)

After reading some of the comments I can see how jpegs might be appropriate in some situations.... Thanks for your post....
