Looking for an all-in-one fax, scan, copy, photo print, etc. What would you suggest under $200 that uses hi-cap individual ink cartridges. I like Brother, HP new or refurb.

May be out of your price range, but the cheapest ink cost on the market, by FAR are the Epson ECO-Tank models:

Get an Epson. You won't regret it. My Epson CX9400fax is over 7 years old and gets constant use.

Most standard color printers use four (4) ink cartridges: magenta, yellow, cyan, and black.
Photo-print specific printers use eight (8) ink cartridges: adding light gray, dark gray, photo cyan, and photo magenta.

You should consider a printer similar to a Canon PIXMA Pro-100 when they are on sale, usually for less than $200.

Unfortunately, I don't think that the PIXMA-PRO 100 is an all-in-one, which is what the OP is looking for.

If an inkjet gets constant use it would last for 20 years easy. If it doesn't get constant use it may last about 6 months.
I got an Epson inkjet (use very little may be a couple of prints a month) and it get clogged beyond repair after 6 months. Epson exchanged for me a new one and this one again clogged after 6 months.
I also have an old HP Deskjet Plus. It's the second version of the Deskjet I bought it in 1989 and it still works fine when I threw it away because I moved in 2011,

Do you think that over the effective life of the printer, the savings on ink would be enough to offset the added cost of the printer? Thank you.

There is NO photo quality printer than also incorporates a scanner and/or a fax machine, as does my HP Officejet Pro 6830 4-color printer.

The Canon PIXMA Pro-100 printer has heaters for each of its eight ink jets, specifically to guard against jet clogging. It works for me, first time, every time.

Yes! If I needed a printer, I would get one of them. The one drawback is that they don't print on discs, and I do a lot of that.

Printers nowadays are designed to last about 2-3 years with normal use. My first HP lasted 8 years and I only bought a new one because of the better features. My Epson Photo R 3000 print head just failed. It just turned 2. It's the throw away society syndrome.

My newest printer, an all-in-one HPC5280that prints on discs, is eight years old. The Canon iP4500's are older than that.

I would go with an Hp 8600 4 in 1 color printer. I've had mine for over 8 years and it's still the best printer I own and not an ink guzzler.

Well, not to argue, but my several years old Epson Artisan 837, an all-in-one, 6 ink printer, prints absolutely beautiful photos. The quality of the prints has surprised even the pros in our photo club. On top of that, it has never given me a moments trouble. The only shortcoming, IMO, is that it only prints up to 8.5x11. Ink usage isn't bad either with the high capacity cartridges.
