Why are gasoline hose on pumps so short now? Remember the good old days when you could park on either side of the pump to fill your car? Now you see a line of cars waiting on one side, while the other side of the pumps is empty. Stupid! Was this a safety issue, or are they just saving money on hoses?
Get your gas at Costco. Retractable hoses are plenty long for opposite side filling.

Jerry,
I suspect some new Federal Reg "to protect the people" from broken hoses (ever recall hearing of one?). The changed the certification for diesel hoses in boats some years ago, which just meant new boats would be more expensive. Maybe the hose companies pushed for both new regs...?

All the self serve places I go, like BJs, have the longer hose and they let you know. I rarely use it to drag across the paint on my car. Only when it's really busy.
Correct. Other reasons for Costco gas, all cars going same way, room in between to pull out even if car in front is not finished, can only pay at pump with credit or debit (no going in to pay with cash, then going back in for change) and lower price. And the number reason...no one walks in to order a sub sandwich or use the restroom while you wait in line.

ADDENDUM to above.
Frequently, BJs runs a promotion where they give you an extra 5¢ off per gallon if you manke ANY purchase in the store that you have to show you card for.

I haven't seen longer gas hoses anywhere in years.
I use a Chase CC that gives between 2% - 5% rebate on gas, and I use a card from Speedway - new in our area - to get 10 cents off per gallon, right at the pump. I run the Speedway card through the machine and then the CC.

Yeah. I heard about the Speedway card. I'll have to pick one up. I also get 10¢ per gallon for every hundred I spend at Stop & Shop. Last time I went I saved 70¢/gallon at the shell station. I paid $1.599. Cheaper than New Jersey.
She'll also has a rewards program and Discover usually runs a 5% rebate for 3 months a year. Gotta play the game.

saving money at the pump... check the internet, you can find a map of state sales & gas taxes, when on a trip, know whether to fill up here or go to the next state. taxes vary from 34 to 70 cents / gallon. Jersey is gooderest, and fortunately no one can drive to Hi.

Gotta mention one better than all. My brother has a friend who spends thousand of dollars in gift cards available at Stop & Shop. Since they're gift cards, he can use them anytime. Here's the trick. He gets credit for the 10¢ for every $100 he spends and that includes the gift cards he buys.
Here's the problem. This guy spends most of day on the Internet & a spreadsheet, calculating how much he should spend and where. I don't know the exact details of that scenario but I think that Stop & Shop has a limit of somewhere around $1.70 to $2.20. Not sure. And, it carries over. All points must be used in 30 days from each sale so this guy often gives gas to his friends.
Some scheme, eh?

Wow really? They are everywhere. You need to get out more......
I have a brother-in-law who is a professional handyman. To save money on gas since he drives a truck, he buys gift cards to Home Depot at the local Kroger which will credit his Kroger Rewards card with double fuel points (and during promotional periods, quadruple fuel points). He's always getting $1.00 off his gas purchases. He says it saves him about $20/week in fuel costs.
What is so hard to pull up to the pump with the fill opening on the pump side? (Gas pump hoses at the marina are 50 ft+)
