I've been thinking of the best way to "deliver" photos to my friends every once in awhile. I have accounts on Flikr and Zenfolio but I don't really want to upload to those and then tell my friends to go look. It feels pushy to say "hey I've got some new pics, so go take a look".....

What I'm trying to do is avoid emailing a group (3-10) of photos to people. That seems pushy also...

I've recently thought of creating a blog (something I've never done and would have to learn about) that would allow me to write a few paragraphs about what I've been shooting and where and then posting a group of new photos there.

What are your ideas?
Dave

I'd suggest Facebook.

It is an interesting idea. My only question would be if the blog site you were using was going to protect your pictures the way flikr does. I just wouldn't want someone who didn't know you to be searching around and find your blog and say, "Hey I like those pictures I think I will copy them and use them as my own." Could you write about what kinds of pictures you have been taking in your blog and then post maybe a teaser picture with a link so that it then connected them with all of your other pictures on flikr?

Tea8: You bring up a valid concern a simple solution may be to utilize a watermark.

I use a blog for sharing my photos with family, friends, etc. My blog is has right-click disabled but we all know there are ways around that, so my images are also watermarked. I like being able to write a paragraph or two and tell a little story while sharing my pictures.

I also link my blog posts to my facebook page, so I share that way aswell.

I use blogger (owned by google), easy to use and understand.

I host my blog on my own private domain, so I don't have the blogger web address, makes it easy for my family to find it that way.

I just post to flickr, and send my friends a link to the photoset. It's not pushy. If they're interested, they'll look. If not, no harm done.

In almost all cases, they will pull up the link and look at the photoset. Some continue to look at individual photos that interest them. Some see nothing of interest and go no further.
Again, no harm done.
I wouldn't worry about a blog unless you were wanting to write.

I guess my friends and family know me pretty good. I just send an email. They don't have to answer or tell me they are good or bad. I add this to the end of every email.(look, enjoy, smile and delete) Works for me.

Would not recommend FaceBook, as their TOS gives them ownership of posted pictures. I also heard they are coming up with a printing service that will allow people to purchase copies of posted pictures (from Face Book), and guess who gets the money? Not the poster! For the record I post 600x900 images on MySpace.

Have you looked into Google+ ?
A lot more control that Facebook. Of course your family and friends will have to have a free account (like Facebook) so you can include them in a "Family and Friends" circle.

The problem with a blog is, that unless they have suscribed to it, they will never know if you have posted anything new to it. I set up galleries on SmugMug and have a mail list that I send to periodically with a link to the site. I know you think that is pushy but as Les Stockton says, "If they're interested, they'll look."

That is exactly why I have pretty much stopped posting pics to facebook. I was listening to the radio one day when the DJ's on there said hey did you know that facebook has changed TOS and now owns all photos you post. So I said oh heck no and I might post a few pics for awhile but I take them down after a couple of weeks.(I do have a couple of pics I leave up because I don't have releases anyway to sell them but I am allowed to use them for personal use.)

I have a blog --it is in my signature-- I am on creative design teams for scrapbooking and a blog is a requirement.
With blogger.com you can fix your photos so that if a person clicks on them they do not get a larger copy.
The only one I put a watermark across are celebrity photos-- For the most pics I am not concerned about someone lifting my pics and saying they are theirs.

Hey Dave, if you have a Zenfolio account you have a built in Blog capability with your existing account. Zen also has tutorials and webinars showing you how to use them. I haven't personally tried it yet but plan to soon. Good luck!
