Beautiful. While I knew Maine was not flatlands, I didn't realize it also had mountains. Thanks for sharing

Very nice photo!

FYI: Western Maine is very mountainous, with a number of fine ski resorts. The Appalachian Trail ends at the top of Mount Katahdin. FYI: Mt. Katahdin is in the center of Baxter State Park, a very large pristine wilderness purchased by a former governor (about 100 years ago) who saw the need to preserve some of the beautiful north woods. So - no motorized vehicles - also there is no hunting allowed in the park. I have backpacked into the center of the park, and had deer standing in the trail see you coming and step off the trail for you to pass...and just watch you walk by. A moose walked through our campsite to get to the pond. It was pretty amazing. Much of the nearby land is owned by the wife of the founder of "Bert's Bees" products, and she wants to merge it with Baxter and create a "Northwoods National Park". Enough of the locals are so afraid of this (thinking it may bring more restrictions on recreational use of the land)that it may never happen, which is a shame, I think. The local economy has been decimated by the closing of the last nearby paper mill. This would be so helpful - I think many people who were going to spend time at Acadia would voyage up to the region if it was a national park.

Gorgeous scene of my home state! I can't see a moose, though :)

I chuckled over Debbie's comment. A pile of rocks makes Katahdin top out at one mile in height. Now that I've lived among volcanoes for over a decade, I've learned there are mountains and then there are mountains.

Moose were not there that day but are ever present. :)

Great pic and colors. I am from the Pacific Nortwest Washinton Sate. Is this a volcanic mountain? If it is looks like 2/3 of the top of the mountain is gone.

Nice capture .Trying to figure where it was taken.Spent two years in and around the area in the late 70's.Climbed it twice and use to go with the kids up to the rock slide"that I heard is now closed" because of the chance of lawsuits. What a shame. In back of Katadin around Telos is beautiful also. Do you know if they still do the river raft excursions from around the Telos road downwards on the Penobscot. My wife's family use to have a camp on Chimney Pond. Lovely area.Thanks.

Not sure about volcanic mountain, but my understanding is that last ice age clipped off top of this mountain and that it's height was originally double the mile height it is now.

This shot was taken from the "Golden Road" at Compass Pond. White water rafting is still done on the Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers most originate out of the Forks.

On our last trip up there we saw no moose. I have to wonder - even though there is no hunting within this huge park, if moose have become more timid due to moose hunting outside of the park. In years past the moose would be "thick" - you would see them in the ponds, on the roads, etc.
