Is the Pentax camera on the same level as the Canon and Nikon?

I love canon , cause i have been with them so long , I would think that they all have their pros and cons . As far as the electronics , I would say yes . Just an opinion , not based on any research . I also still have my K1000 , :)

Nikon and Canon are probably the most popular smaller format among pros, but I recently got some photos from someone who shot with a Pentax K5 and the image quality was incredable! Remember though, it's the photographer, not the camera. I doubt anyone could tell the difference between prints of the same thing, shot with the cameras and equivalent lenses. I use Nikon D700, D7000, D300s and have most of the good lenses so I wouldn't switch.

One thing that Pentax has that mine doesn't is vibration reduction in the body. Any lens you put on the Pentax is ready for shaky hands. With Nikon and Canon, it's built into each lens -if it even has it.

Hi, I shoot Canon but I can't give you a good reason except I now have so much $ invested I can't afford to switch. My sister shoots with a Pentax and takes great pictures. Her pictures are equal to any others except perhaps the real pros. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike

It depends what you want to get out of it. What kind of photography do you have in mind?

Mostly nature...birds, flowers, landscapes, clouds. But I do take pictures of my six grandkids on occaision. I have an old Pentax film camera with a zoom lens. I don't want to do film anymore, but am wondering if I buy a digital camera could my old zoom lens fit on it.

That would best be answered by a good photography store...not a Best Buy. Pentax are good cameras and should meet your needs for casual and family photography. You do want to make sure that your telephoto lens is still in good condition. When I went digital I found out that my old film telephoto had gotten fungus inside the lens which couldn't be repaired.

One thing you may want to consider is that you can buy used and refurbished lenses at good prices. Because of the popularity of Nikon and Canon availability is far greater. Also refurbished cameras are often a good buy and again far more to choose from in Nikon and Canon world. I also would suggest that in terms of forums such as this one you can find more help with Nikon and Canon because there are so many more users. Just another thought.

I have been using Pentax all my life. Started with K100, then PZ-1P. Moved to digital about 5 years ago. I have a K7 & also the new K5. Most of my lens's are Sigma. I have a 300, 2.8, 300 4.5 as a back up. I have been using my 150-500 a lot this winter. Just one problem with pentax, not quite the lens selections. I thought I was missing the boat by not owning Canon or Nikon but I think I'm doing ok with Pentax! None of these have been edited, straight from the camera.

Pentax are just as good as Canon or Nikon. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. I have used Pentax going back to the film days and have felt no need to change camp.
