Straight manual 28-mm to 35-mm manual lenses work best for reverse-mounting. There are hundreds of these "older" design lenses available for reasonable prices.
There is also a device for closing the lens' diaphragm (aperture) just before you take the photo, so you can focus wide-open, then instantly close-down for image capture. The Nikon BR-6 is pictured below.
Michael Shahan uses bellows with reversed lens, in the field. The second image is one of his field set-ups.
Your knowledge and advice on Macro is what keeps me still picking away at getting better results with my S.S. budget camera kit. I have decided to retire my 4-way rail and go for a bellows to work with an old, reversed-50mm I recently acquired. I found working with a reversed 24mm good, but very difficult to focus.

We would be quite interested to see differences between a reversed-24mm lens compared to a reversed-50mm lens, both at 1:1 magnification. Please consider posting a couple of images for comparison.

Problem with that Douglass is that the different focal length lenses have different magnification ratios, thus you can't show differences at life size as, unlike a macro lens, the magnification ratio is fixed. Here is a link on this. I was trying to find my BR-2 reversing ring as it listed different focal lengths & corresponding magnification ratios, but I can't find it. I think I did scan it at one time & post it here on the True Macro forum, but I have changed computers since then & am unable to find it.

OP specifically mentioned use of bellows, which will allow matching Field-of-Views (magnifications) for different reversed-lenses.

I see where Harvey mentioned using bellows... My bad.
