Does anyone have good tips on shooting sunsets? I seem to find myself using the "trial and error" method.

Regarding composition, since virtually everyone has seen a stunning sunset or sunrise, to make the image more compelling for the viewer, have something interesting as foreground silhouette: old building, water, lone tree, person, animal etc.

Regarding exposure, I don't think that "trial and error" or "experimenting with settings" is the way to learn. There are lots and lots of books and videos and online articles about exposure and how the camera's metering system works.

For example, there are specific and important reasons why you might want a shallow depth of field, or a fast/slow shutter speed, and also why it's usually better to keep ISO as low as possible. You need to know these things :)

In your own camera's manual there should be explanations about your metering options.

Once you have a basic understanding of ISO, shutter speed, aperture and metering modes, you will have a solid foundation for making choices in the field.
