Hello Lenny

David, I've never seen red polka dot mushrooms like that except in a children's story book illustration! I didn't know they existed for real! Where might these be found??
Sue

Hello Sue

I agree, they are the quintessential "fairy-tale" mushroom. If you search the web for Fly Agaric, Fly Amanita or Amanita Muscaria you should be able to find information on these. This is obviously a Eurasian species but there are close relatives found in North America. They also come in various colours from this bright red with white warts through various shades of rusts, browns, yellows and white. Be aware that some are among the most deadly poisonous fungi known. The white ones in particular are highly toxic called Destroying Angel and closely related Death Cap. They contain toxins that attack and destroy the liver.

They are associated with the root systems of various trees including oak, birch and pine. They seem to like deep shade or maybe areas with just a little sunlight. So look in damp and dark areas of mature mixed deciduous/conifer woodlands. There are likely to be Fungi Groups in your vicinity that will have information.

Enjoy the hunt for them and post any pictures!
