Going to photograph sunrises and sunsets at North Rim of Grand Canyon next month. Suggestions on specific locations for both times would be appreciated. Hope snow doesn't close the roads. Thanks.

While the facilities close on Oct. 15, the road stays open until closed by snow. November is really chancy. Not at all like the south rim.

Be prepared for a wide range of weather, balmy to arctic, still to hurricane, dry to torrents. Also expect some surprise wildlife.

Sorry for my mis-information, we were there a couple years ago and I thought the whole ball of wax shut down the 15th. That could change our future plans, thanks.

If by "next month" you mean November - good luck. By the time you reach Jacob Lake (if you do), you will know whether to drive or snowshoe. North Rim is SO much more impactful for photography than South Rim - sun comes up in SE (to your left) this time of year, sets SW. There are numerous trails that give a canyon vantage point if you can (are allowed) to access them. You will need to keep a *close* check on daily weather, since you will be traversing numerous climate zones on such a safari this time of year.

Cape Royal. If atmospherics permit, a view to the south has both the canyon and San Francisci peak (50miles away near Fagstaff) in the frame looks good with telephoto compression.

Good luck! Watch the weather, you are 1000 feet higher than the south rim and there will be no facilities open. We were there one year (earlier in the year) and they closed the park because of a forest fire. We had the option of staying or leaving since the danger was forecast to last less than a week. We stayed and had the best photo op since less than 20 people plus staff were there. We ate with the staff in their commissary. Great experience. But...it was earlier in the year. Be careful and keep safe.

Cape Royal is a good choice, but isn't always open in November as it is slightly off the main road.

I would worry less about where to shoot from and more about making sure that you are equipped for whatever weather conditions you might encounter.

Two Novembers ago during the week of Thanksgiving we visited the North rim. It was raining lightly 50 miles north of the canyon, but by the time we got to the park it was starting to snow.

The road remained open, however, we had as much as six inches of snow on the pass on the way out of the park. Since it was a rental car we didn't have snow tires or chains.

The weather conditions were poor, we had snow, blowing wind, fog, rain and at times couldn't even see the rim we were on let alone the canyon.

Despite all of that I would encourage you to go. It is some of the best pictures I have ever taken at the Grand Canyon and it was well worth the time and effort to get there even though we only had occasional glimpses at the canyon and never saw the sunset.

Also you might check there are a couple of four wheel drive roads that provide access to small portions of the north rim.

One other suggestion. I would recommend that you look at what else is in the same general area just in case the road has closed earlier than normal because of an early storm.

There are plenty of other things to see in the general vicinity so there are options. The day we went to the north rim we had intended to visit Wire Pass and Buckskin Canyon, but the rain had made the slot canyons unsafe. Just make sure that you have options for whatever weather conditions you might see.

Even if the weather and roads are good, keep an eye on any incoming weather. It is a long distance in to the canyon rim. And, if the weather changes while at the rim, it could become impossible to get out. Even if it is just rain, and no chance of snow, be aware you are on a canyon rim. Lighting likes to strike the high points of the terrain. In the case of the Grand Canyon, that could be the photographer and his tripod on the rim.

Jacob Lake is about 50 miles from the north rim and it is all winding two lane roads it is also the closest place too stay if the hotel is closed at the north rim.IF I was you I would I would make sure you have snow chains with you;better to be safe then sorry.AT that time of the year you will probley have the park to yourself if it is open.
