2nd Amendment: A brilliant article by Adam Gopnik of the New Yorker refuting the claim by others, that the 2nd Amendment guarantees the rights of "individuals" to own fire arms.

I've always believed that "the right to bear arms" referred to the military, not the public as a whole.

So sad. The NRA has been one of the driving forces behind the 'peoples' right to bear arms.

All it is is an interpretation postulated to conform to his beliefs...Same as any other opinion piece by anyone on either side of the argument.... Fact remains that guns are a tool, take them away & the criminal or crazed person will be the only one with access. No guns ?, simple answer, they will find another tool to commit their crimes with.Plus, with the hige number of guns already in America, how would you control them ?. Kinda like the illegal immigrant situation where some advocate deporting them.

It always amazes me that the states that needs guns the most to protect them are the ones that are always against guns of any kind.

Australia restricted gun possession prior to 1997 with access limited to fewer people, thus the number of guns was a lot fewer than in this country. Pus there are still people who have smuggled in guns into that country. Black markets thrive everywhere. Kinda like the drug situation in this country. War against drugs didn't do much to stop the trade did it ? Same in the last century with Prohibition.... Where there is a will, there is a way.

So is the military or police going to be there to protect you if someone breaks into your house with intent to harm you. Dial 911 and ask the criminal to wait, no thanks I would rather depend on myself for protection.

I did & found it to be slanted to his agenda, in other words, propaganda, which both sides spew... Many articles omit facts & figures which do not support their beliefs & try to twist words to mean what they want them to...This is common to both sides of an argument.

Again, how do other countries deal with this, such as Australia? They seem to be safer than our country.

That is key to the problem......interpretation on both sides. How can we ever know the real intention of the 2nd amendment?

Where is that fact? Since Australia took control of the gun issue (after a mass murder years ago) there have been no more mass murders.

Mass murders, while tragic, only account for a small percentage of deaths and the criminal or criminally insane people will resort to other means if guns are not available. The emphasis needs to be on the perpetrators, not the tools. We also need to curtail the coverage of such events as that coverage spawns copycat killers.
