how many hours we spent with these, huh?
I remember when they actually came in little boxes, hence the name.
I would get a dollar from a favourite aunt every birthday and Christmas and immediately head down to the store.(a stationary store, for some reason) They had a big display case and I'd point out which one I wanted and the lady would open a door in the base of the cabinet and there they'd all be in their little cardboard boxes.
I always picked military vehicles, never cared about the cars, which drove my brother crazy. He always wanted me to buy a T-bird for some reason.
Weird memories! Sorry!
They were made in England originally... no?

Exactly what I was thinking! When I was an adolescent, my 20-cents/week allowance allowed me to afford one matchbox truck or car, every other month. I would visit my local hobby shop regularly, planning my next purchase.
Yes they were. A company called Lesley or Lesney. Something like that.

remember johnny lightning? they had something that came with the vehicle like the old hot wheel metal badge with a drawing of the car on it. Johnny lightnings are still around.
I remember buying them for our boys and now my son won't settle for any other brand but Matchbox for his son!
