Budget? Be aware the cheap printer prices are made up on the ink prices. Strangely enough the more expensive printers with larger ink tanks cost less to use. Someone calculated that OEM ink cartridges comes out to about $5000 a gallon. My canon Pro 100 inks are $124 a set. It just went out of warrenty so I am switching to Precision Colors refillable cartridges with 4 oz bottles of ink (7 refills worth) that cost $155 plus shipping.(their ink is custom made to match Canon ink by a company that makes bulk ink for the industry)

Robert is correct. I also own a Canon PIXMA Pro-100 printer.
I want to direct you to a new UHH section called Printers and Color Printing Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-120-1.html . In that section, you can learn about the Pro-100 and other printers.

G M P, in your search for a printer, you might also find this interesting.

It is a little dated, and it's worth noting that one firm he mentions, Calypso (Imaging) is no longer in business.

However, there are many other choices available to outsource your printing.

We just worked on a presentation for our Meetup Group on Printers, Paper, Ink & Workflow. Private message me with your email address and I can send it to you. Not all inks or paper are the same when it comes to longevity. Dye based, pigmented and hybrid inks make the research complex. I started printing at home to control the end results vs family members going to a chain drug store and getting results that were so varied I said to myself "Why should I bother trying so hard to capture and create a special photo of our grandchildren?" You do not have to spend a bunch of bucks to get decent results and decent longevity. I worked for (39) years in the Wholesale Paper Industry and Commercial Printing Industry (different technology & much larger equipment).

Personally I use and recommend Pixma by Canon. I've had excellent luck with my 3-way (scanner, copier, printer)
Unlike some here I always buy Canon ink as well.

Good luck

try to find out whose's ink they are refilled with, a lot of aftermarket ink is....not real good...... (I started to put a 4 letter word starting with 's'.)

Check out Precision Color, they use Image Specialist inks (a large ink manufactorer who supply many of the OEM cartridge makers.)

I bought an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and was delighted...at first. Of course, you need to calibrate your monitor with the printer (I used a Spyder puck), and keep it that way, so the colors won't drift. As I printed large images for my clients I was amazed at how quickly it used up its ink, and not all at the same rate, so I was frequently replacing cartridges. Several times it ran out in the middle of a print, so I had to start over (using even more ink). Also, I had to keep in stock 4 kinds of paper for color and B&W printing. Although I could not fault the quality of output after a while, it became more of a hassle than it was worth. I wanted more "control" but once finding a good custom lab that would do an excellent job of color and contrast correction, I decided to outsource the printing and sold my printer. That's just my experience; I have no conceit of speaking for all.

I have had the Epson 3880 for about 3 years, it has been an excellent printer. I have never had to start a print over if the ink runs out, it will stop, you just slip in another cartridge and off it goes. Of course you have to have another cartridge on hand. It's always good to read the manual isn't it?

I bought an Epson Stylus Photo R3000 two years ago and have loved it ever since. Great color and, as important, Great B&W. So far I've used Epson's "K3" inks and, while they're expensive, they last.

Be aware that it won't likely be simple and easy. Connecting it, putting the driver in your computer, and plugging it into power will be easy but most times prints don't end up looking like what is on your screen unless you have calibrated your monitor. I've had reasonable prints over the years and sometimes they were fairly accurate but I have much better luck, and it costs a lot less, to drive over to Costco where they have calibrated, commercial duty, wet printers as well as inkjet printers, and have them print for me at 1/2 or less of the price of buying paper and ink to do my own.

Good luck if you insist on going on this adventure though.
