For entry level photographers, looking for a simple and free program to improve (edit) images, Win 10 Photo Gallery offers many editing tools. While it is certainly not sophisticated, It may be a viable option for some. And, IT'S FREE!!

I agree with you for basic editing it's very good, the only criticism I would make is the EXIF is also very basic.
"Google +" also has a good free basic editor.
They are both very quick in use so give them a try.

Agreed. But some beginners may not even use that info (yet!)

Better than nothing and a tease for the beginner. Once they see the small but nice changes with a simple editor, they will be amazed and what a better one can do.

Working with JPG, I think Win10 Photo is a better program if simplicity is your goal. The color boost is really neat.

One added feature to the W10's version of Photo Gallery is that it will open RAW(NEF) images and let you save the edits to a JPG much like a simplified version of Lightroom.

Yes that is a plus although not the most efficient for some files.

If your NEF files are large they take awhile to load and open, at least on my Win10, 32GB, SSD, i7 computer.

Can't imagine how it would be on a wimpy computer.

It seems to work fine with my A6 Quad Core Acer that came with W7. The files my D610 produces are quite large even after editing and saving as JPGs.

Even though a 14 bit NEF D610 file is approximately 29mp its less than 1/2 the size of a file from the D810 or D800/E.
