UV Filter or Not? You be the judge.

This topic has been debated ad nauseum with those opposing the use of such filters frequently maintaining that, in addition to offering no protection, UV filters degrade the image. Look at these two images and tell me which one was shot with a filter and which was taken with the filter removed. This is not a trick question. Same camera and settings, same lens and flash and tripod were used. Images were cropped as close to identical as I could muster with no other post-processing applied. In other words, other than cropping, these are straight out of camera images.

The top one has the filter...skin color looks darker in the cheek area.

I'll guess #2, just because it seems to have color subtracted. I've done with/without comparisons, but your examples are more extreme than what I've gotten.

I've switched to mostly clear filters for protection.

Speaking of protection for your gear, how about condoms and a toilet paper roll? Class act all the way!

top one, color are truer , all edges are sharper as the filter introduces a little contrast.

Alternative crop to make comparing easier.

I don't understand the point of the exercise? The slight hue/color difference, if any, is going to be (or at least can be) corrected to the photographers taste in PP regardless. The slight differential is not going to change whether someone believes it's beneficial, for whatever reason, to use a UV (or clear) filter.

Very nice job, especially from one who doesn't ..."understand the point of the exercise". Thanks.

Hi Jim Bob
If I have to guess it would be the bottom photo #2?

Hey Richard and thanks for taking the time to look and comment. Are you saying the bottom shot is with the filter or without? And how did you reach your conclusion?

Thanks a lot for your excellent crops. Can you make out a discernible difference in image quality, especially with reference to detail?
