Hi All which do you favor auto or manual?

Ever wonder if those settings you see in Photo Mags are manual or auto?

I read an interview with a weather photog, he was asked what his settings were, he said paraphrased I have settings I have worked out over the years. Presets... Way back when I was doing weddings I used a Canon A-1 set to "P" because I knew I did not have to mess with the flash.

I use a Canon SX20 for a lot of my work. It is light and has a good zoom and macro plus auto focus, and it is always with me.. It is usually on auto with auto focus.
Other cameras Canon 50D I bought used, 60D I bought new.

DO you have a favorite Preset, use Auto a lot or once in a while, still learning how to balance Shutter Speed + ISO + Aperture, or are really familiar with your camera, lets see how you work

Down load photo open with your viewer and you can see the settings.

All of these were taken with my SX20 with no PP Front lit leaves selective focus

Hi dane, interesting subject will not be able to post as no internet where I am working, so just the phone to comment.
My first serious camera was a Zenith B 35 mm film camera fully manual and I had a seperate light meter to get my settings. Have since worked my way through the Canon range film and Digital with all gadgets and gizmos have tried some but still shoot fully manual with autofocus off and still use a light meter to balance the light if working in a studio
It is my view that everyone should learn to shoot manual it is the best way in my opinion of learning about your camera and the relationship between shutter and aperture
Once you have learnt that you will have a better idea which preset to use for different situations
Ok thats me done, good luck with the challenge dane

Good Morning Dane! Thank you for taking on as host. This will be an interesting challenge! I started out with a Canon point and shoot. It had a couple of presets and I probably used auto most of the time. I was able to use Elements 4 for editing and it worked fairly well. I also used jpeg format. I then got my 1st SLR camera...Canon T2i. I used TV mode most of the time and still used jpeg format. A couple of years ago I purchased my Canon 7D as I had started to get serious about shooting action shots. I used several different settings..TV, AV and then really got into using manual on the camera and back and forth between manual and auto on the lenses. I also use selective focus a lot! I used to set my white balance according to what I was shooting. Now (6 mo.) I am "almost" exclusively using Manual and auto white balance and switched to RAW about 6 months ago and will likely never go back to jpeg. I have learned a lot about aperture, ISO and F stops. I have a long way to go to feel "comfortable" about what I am doing and usually have to play with the settings to get it right, but feel I am moving forward. I learned a long time ago that having mentors and peers to work along side will move you forward much quicker than working totally alone. I belong to a photography club here in Canada and helped run one in Mission Texas. Both made a big impact on my photography. And last, but not least, the UHH forum has been a huge influence in how I advanced. What a great group of people with diverse knowledge and willingness to teach!

Good morning, Dane. Thanks so much for hosting. I will be back. This will be another interesting challenge. My plan is to shoot a scene in auto and the same in manual to see what differences there might be.

I started with a brownie twin lens reflex I received when I was in boy scouts. I learned to develop film and make contact prints in the 6th grade my Dad taught me how. later I had many different cameras a Cannon 35mm 1\2frame was one of my favorites. Home from Viet Nam and stationed in Kansas I bought a used Minolta 35mm and a light meter and used that i continued to develope my own film and experiment in the darkroom on post. I went to Germany while there I bought my Dad an Ashi-Pentax Spot a matic it had a built in light meter Wow.

Time for breakfast

Just stopped work for a drink and sat outside in the sun. Taken 2 photos with my phone so obviously fully auto
A good example where auto doesnt work. #1 ok foreground detail but tops of shrubs and sky bleached out. By raising the camera slightly foreground is far too dark and lost detail but sky and shrubs are good.
In manual you could have balanced the light and also maybe used a graduated ND filter

creativ simon great example.

Using your camera a lot you know what it does, I have noticed that the SX 20 is starting to focus slower, and the software is getting slower.

I used the Minolta for a couple of years until the mirror quit. I obtained a used canon FT used that until my daughter was born I bought a Canon AE-1 as a birthday present. I bought a Canon F-1 used it did not have a flash attachment. I bought a second F-1, and a third with the AE finder. Now I had a dark room a 35mm enlarger, bought a 2 1/4 enlarger. I was doing weddings and action photos at the local Race track, and senior Photos. Not quite enough money to strike out on my own, when the Wyoming boom and bust energy economy busted. My job required me to travel a lot 3 weeks on the road 3 days home. I did carry a F1 in the truck and have many slides of my adventures, Taken all over Wyoming , Colorado and the Salt Lake Olympics. My daughter went to college and took 2 of the F1's with her. In 2001 I bought a Fugi Fine Pix A205, left it my truck and the display froze at -30, I then bought a Canon PowerShot S3 IS, Gave it to a friend and bought the SX20, in 2011 I bought the 60D, and earlier this year I bought the used 50D.

SO that is me in a nut shell.

I don't think auto was an option when I started shooting. So most of my shooting time in in manual. I rarely ever shoot in auto.

A couple from Missouri taken in Maine.
