I turned it off the auto focus for the moon eclipse photos and clicked it back on and it doesn't work. I tried different lenses and they don't work either. I also put the lens that was on my d610 on to my d5200 and it works fine. It's a refurb out of NY and I've had it 9 months and don't think I have a warranty. The camera also has been known to switch itself from dx to fx mode all by itself. So something in the menu/electronics could be the problem. I feel a humm or click when i press the shutter. Put no movement in the lens. So it's probably in the menu or the focus motor is shot. Any ideas??
Also how spendy is a motor?? Anyone know?
Is the AF/MF switch on the camera body set to AF? (The most likely problem)
Are you using AF lenses, or AF-S lenses?
Posting an image with Exif data intact would also assist in diagnosing the issue.
That was it!! The af/mf switch. I don't know how it got switched ....
I didn't even realize there was a switch there.
Thank You MT Shooter!!!

That's almost always the problem when I hear of this issue. Good luck and keep an eye on that switch! (As well as the operator!) ;-)
An instructional video I saw a while back recommended leaving the lens AF turn on and using only the camera switch - to make life simpler.

It is a well known fact that the majority of the AF problems we encounter are usually operator's error.

Are you saying to turn the AF switch to "ON" for the lens, and turn an AF switch to OFF or ON using an internal switch?
I just looked at the manual for my D5300 and did not see any mention of an internal AF on/off switch.
