An interview with LeeG,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I saved up for my first camera - a Brownie Hawkeye - about 60 year ago! My dad and grandfather were both serious amateurs, with 4x5 Speed graphics, SLRs, etc. So I guess it rubbed off. From the early 1970s, I did a lot of shooting with a Pentax Spotmatic...it became like an extension of my mind and hand. I also did a good bit of darkroom work, including various manipulations of original images. I thought that theoretically the 'purest' photo might be done with a pin-hole camera directly onto positive film: no intervening lens or negatives! Never got it to work to well, though.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Learned mostly from reading, shooting, developing, and interaction with other photographers. I am a graphic designer by trade, and a retired professor by... well, profession. I lean towards compositions with strong focal points or patterns, as well as interesting subjects.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Subject, composition, and appropriate technique for the intended effect.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I am still wading into the complexities of my new a6000 for the recent pasture shot. This was a hand-held shot with aperture priority, f8.0 1/160 ISO 100 @20mm with PS sharpening and saturation bump.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I almost always do some pp, using Photoshop CS2. At a minimum, usually cropping and slight sharpening. Then contrast, saturation, masking, etc., if called for.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I like the challenge of an assigned shoot. In the few of these I have entered, I like seeing what others have done. So far, I have always voted for someone else's entry.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
This was a quick grab shot: I was hoping for a stronger main focal point, e.g., close up of a steer. I would have preferred either brighter sun, or more pronounced fog.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
More awareness of concept, to give interest-depth to formal elements and composition.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Photoshop CS2!

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I am very pleased with my new 16-55 Sony a6000 kit lens. Shooting at 24 MPx/Fine, I haven't felt much need to use the longer zoom lens that came with it, since I can crop severely and still get a sharp image.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I used to use bounce flash in my film days, but occasionally now am using only the built-in flash for shadow fill.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am a retired communication art professor, and still enjoy doing a variety of graphic design and advertising jobs - pro-bono mostly.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I had a 'twilight-zone' experience shooting the solar eclipse in February 1970 using slide film in my old Pentax. The image came out showing the aperture leaves INSIDE the lens in focus! Never figured that out except possible internal refractions.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I offer prints - mostly nature subjects - at the annual Burke's Garden, Virginia, "Fall Festival." And I have posted a few thing with UH.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I need to learn more than advise. ~ Look at what others post and refer to, in places like UH and Shuttertalk. Have a camera with you all the time possible, to be ready for good capture opportunities.

An interview with gotphotos,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been into photography for three years now. I have always had an interest in photography, but finally have the time and finances to partake in the hobby.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have taken a few classes on photography online through our Community College and the Missouri Botanical Garden Education Program, but for me, the best learning has come from trial and error and reading other people’s ideas on the internet. I do mostly sports and landscape photography. I find sports to be the most challenging.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
In my opinion, the thing that makes some photos stand out more than others is the right amount of color and also, does the photo leave the viewer with a story and/or questions about the photo.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I normally use my Pentax K-3 for shooting, however, on this day, I had my Olympus Stylus SH-50 point and shoot....I guess I should keep it simple more often. I pass this barn at least once/week and was out for a ride, keeping watch for 'fields of green'. This photo seemed to fit the description. I tried several settings on the camera, but this one was taken using one of the "Magic" settings on the camera called "Vivid". I loved the way it made the colors pop.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I do often post-process my photos (not this particular one because the camera does it for you. I most often bump up the saturation a bit on the colors and often crop and straighten.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
My family has influenced my photography more than anyone or anything…they are always willing to put up with my camera in their face, plus they are very involved in sports. The inspiration for this shot was the topic for the week of ‘fields of green’. I thought of this spot right off the bat…it really helped that the owner takes such great care of the property.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I don’t think I would change anything about what I did on this photo since it won the contest .

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I don't think I can put my finger on what I wish I'd known before I got into photography...the journey and learning is what I really love about it. If I ever 'know' how to take a perfect picture every time, I'd probably lose interest in photography.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My favorite accessory to my camera would probably be a tripod because I have a hard time holding the camera still enough to take a very clear photo, however, I didn't use one for the 'fields of green photo".

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
My favorite lens would be the Sigma 18-250mm zoom lens. It is on my Pentax K-3 99% of the time, so unless I want to take one with the fisheye, the zoom works for almost every type of photography you can think of, even portraiture.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I shoot mostly in natural light, I just think it makes photography so much easier and better. I have not learned how to use my removable flash yet, so very seldom use it...this is on my list of classes. In the meantime, Photoshop certainly helps lighten things up when needed.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I could not do photography, I would probably ride my bike and hike more.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I think the funniest story I can tell about my photography experiences is the one about this photo because I've been uploading photos for about two years now that I have taken with the big DSLR and on this particular day, I took this photo with a point and shoot and no tripod....I want everyone to know this.....I have a friend who consistently wins with her photography in our club and the only camera she owns is a point and shoot...so you don't have to spend a lot of money or carry a lot of heavy equipment around to take great photos!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Upon our recent return from the United Kingdom, I have been posting public photos on my facebook page, one day at a time per our travels here https://www.facebook.com/nancy.kossmann .

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
My only advice for anyone would be, grab a camera (as Annie Leibovitz once said, the best camera to use is the one in your pocket) and start taking photos.
Lastly, thank you for the website, I enjoy it.
