First shot at using ND filters

Here is my first shot at using ND filters. I currently have an 82mm variable ND filter, but want to move to square filters. Is there a square filter holder out there that will allow me to use my current circular filter?

Beautiful shot, Mark. If you haven't already done so, you might read up on variable ND filters. Apparently there is an inherent characteristic that causes even the best of them to produce an "X"-like image at full density in stills.

I was curious about the filter mount you propose. I don't have any Cokin-style filters, but I really need to pick up some graduated NDs for landscapes, especially sunsets/sunrises. The square filters are particularly well-suited because they can be moved up or down to align the density where it's needed without affecting composition, something that can't be done with a round filter.

So, you piqued my curiosity. I did a cursory search on eBay for "square round filter mount" and got this:

I'm not sure if it would accommodate regular round, threaded filters, but it does allow you to use a polarizer - and rotate it to adjust it.

I tend to use 2 filters as ND filters, a polarizer and a Chinese made Zomei rated for 4 stops but it turned out to be 7 stops, an overkill for most applications.
The polarizer gives me at full polarization 2 stops of light compensation and I find that for running water but especially in low light it works very well.
When I use my square ND or GND filters, all of them square filters my tendecy is to place the filter that I hold with my right hand in front of the lens. I use no adapters.
That is a very nice shot although for my personal taste the middle tonalities are too bright.

Nice shot. I have a set of Cokin square filters and adapter that includes the ND filter but have not tried to use them yet. I need to get them out and try after seeing how well your first try with the ND filter came out.

The first waterfall I came to required a graduated ND in addition to a ND. I spent some time this week looking at square NDs, and its tough to find something that will work the way I want it and not break the bank.
