Before plastic, metal ones had "conical" screw tops. Before that, flat carries with two negatives exposed one at a time in Speed Graphic camera with flash bulbs of 'steel wool' for one time use. I am not old enough to have ever seen the explosive flash powder. That must have been a riot.

I still have a couple around the house. They even have really old unexposed film in them that can't be any good. I have no clue why I'm saving them.

Your report of the exact color(s) of the can and lid and what kind of film is inside would be a clue to Kodak's color coding system.
