An interview with debbie wrazen,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Since I was 9 years old. My dad gave me a Kodak 'Brownie'.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
My dream is to go on to future formal training but at this time I am self-taught, attend community ed. courses, read constantly about the technical aspects and composition and pay for private lessons from expert photographers in the field.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Composition and lighting

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
For the 'Memories of Labor Past' photo I knew that the atmosphere would be rather dark and also that taking a photo of the blacksmith working a piece of iron required a high shutter speed,so before going into the building I completed a preliminary check of all technical essentials and was prepared to use a soft flash , if necessary. The shop was very dark with the exception of light from a few windows that were not directly filtering light upon the blacksmith

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
My PP includes 'in camera pp'; microsoft photo, picassa and photoshop cs6 ( a humbling experience and a work in progress)

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Of late I have been following the work of photographer , Barbara Cole. Her photography is completed with polaroid film and manipulation of studio light. Her photos have the look of a master oil painters.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
It's great when your subject is not surrounded by alot of background clutter, but that wasn't possible with the' Labors Past' photo so I had to hope that my subject would stand out through combined use of my ISO and soft flash.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Oh gosh, I wish the 'light went on' ( pun intended) sooner about lighting .

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A tripod and remote.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
At this point in time I am favoring the Olympus 40-150 PRO with a 1.4 extender. It has a stretch of focal lengths so it's handy for closeup and telephoto shots.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I take an external bounce flash and use an adapted diffuser.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am still actively involved in a teaching career but each day I always make time for furthering my photographic skill.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
During the summer, I was out on a 'photographic adventure' and stopped to take a photo of a cat trying to catch a mouse in a small field of tall grass along the side of a country road. A woman living in a house opposite field misunderstood my intentions. She thought I was a 'ggogle earth photographer' and was attempting to photograph her home! I tried to explain that I was an amateur but she threatened to call the police on me. The cat ran away and so did I.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Presently, I am working on a website. I won a blue ribbon for one of my photos at our county fair and was very pleased. Outdoor photography is my favorite form.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I am always humbled by the skill of the photographers on the forum. So, I am readily engaged by the amount of discussion and advice dispensed by others. For all you 'newbie amateurs' like myself: " Look, read and learn from the vast amount of shared skill on this forum. It's the best'.
