When I traveled the world in the military, I saw firsthand the poverty, oppression and horrors that we, as Americans, only read about in the news. It's not that we don't have problems and issues, but we have the freedom and resources and desire to improve our society, as we have done for more than two centuries. We are an unfinished experiment that keeps being refined. The sentiments of Baxter, as he reflects on his blessings from his porch, should be embraced by all of our citizens. We truly are lucky to be Americans, but more accurately, we are indebted to those who have secured our blessings and liberties with their blood. If we take our freedoms for granted, we dishonor the sacrifices of the most courageous among us.
Baxter seems like a neighbor we'd all like to have...
