I have a Nikon D3100 and only want to take 1 lens with to Disney. With trying to watch 3 kids, I do not want to worry about my camera bag full of stuff. So I would like to buy one good general purpose for trips like this.

I always suggest either a 50mm prime lens or a wide angle for all encompassing shots. I didn't want to be carrying my DSLR around last time so I opted for my P&S.

For the price of a decent mid range zoom, you could get a very nice P&S that fits in your pocket and can go with you on all the rides. Do you really want to lug an SLR all over Disney?

There is something to be said for reaching for your camera and not your camera bag.

Something to think about...

Thanks, That is something to think about.... I'm not a big rider the wife and kids like to ride (I do some rides) ,I'm the guy who gets to hold everything as they ride so I like to walk around and shoot!!

I was going to recommend the 50mm as well. You'll have to use your feet as your zoom feature but it's a great little lens.

I opted for my camera phone when we went to universal this summer, I wanted to enjoy the day at the park and on the rides and not worry about my camera. The kids were super happy about it as well, cause they didn't have to pose in front of the camera, lmao.

Don't forget, on the D3100 a 50mm is a telephoto...

I am going to give you my best advise as the mom of 3 who LOVES to take pictures.
For Disney.
LEAVE the D-SLR at home!
Buy a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 (279 at BestBuy) 16/20x!!. take it- enjoy it you can hand it to someone to take a pic for you without tons of instruction!
look at all the features in the scene section-- this little gem is fantastic! I even get WONDERFUL night time shots out of it. AND it is one heck of a lot cheaper than the 28-300 or 18-250mm lens you will want for your Disney trip!
Go have a MAGICAL DAY! That is what Disney is for! I LOVE DISNEY!!

I have Nikon 18-200mm and would highly recommend it for your trip to Disney.

There are several good long range zooms advertised, upon reading specs though I always stayed away from them, I also would like a faster lens in Disney for the evenings, I love twilight photos, finally I would consider a high end P&S , Canon in my case, G12 or SX40is if my memory serves, back up to the DSLR and easier to carry all day. Here's my two cents worth. At Disney you normally will be taking shots of scenery and people. A good medium zoom, say 24-70mm will do the trick without being too heavy. If you think you will need a longer lens, take a 1.4 teleconverter for those shots.
I have been to Disney countless times and unless you are going to take a behind the scenes tour where you have less people and more time to set up the shots a point and shoot camera makes the most sense to me. If you go this route, look for a camera with a viewfinder and not just a viewing screen as they are hard to see in bright sunlight. Also get one that has a real zoom, not just digital zoom as the image will degrade more with digital zoom.

I agree that any of the mid-range zooms would work great, so would a point and shoot but I would rather spend the cash on a new lens for my camera then a point and shoot. Also, instead of being the pack horse for the day rent a locker for 10 dollars and you can go in and out of it all day. I live about 25 minutes from Disney and when I have company I rent a locker
