This year's monsoon in Tucson has been weird; started early in June and is still going on. One benefit has been the explosion of color in the Catalina Foothills north of town. Ferocactus wislizenii, the common "fishook barrel" has shown more color than I remember from any other year. Barrels out on the flat not so much. We take what we can get.
A lot of beauty there but there is also a lot of OUCH!!!!
TFS Another desert dweller, Cliff from the upper Mojave.
It should be obvious from the first picture that these things are NOT a source of survival water in the desert!
I remember a film from one or another of those survival classes we sat through years ago that showed a couple of guys attacking a barrel with a machete. They hacked and chopped and finally got the top off to expose a dryish pulp inside. I don't remember that either one of the actors actually drank the liquid that came out of the pulp, it would have killed them according to a guy from the Desert Museum.
And I never did find a comfortable way to carry a machete in my flight suit so it was moot.

Very nice series. The cactus blooms are gems to be enjoyed.

Nice series. I hiked in the Superstitions one spring day when the cactus were blooming - it was stunning.
Nice shots. Love the colors.
Beautiful color coming from the desert.
These pictures are just stunning, Dan! Very well captured!
