Beautiful picture and you caught the expressions flawlessly. May his canine partner "Live long and prosper" over (hopefully) the next years. Border Collies are exceptional animals and fantastic and loyal pets. I know; I have one.

Border collies were born to love. I have three of them, Rhett age 12 going on 13, Raygan 9 and my trial BC is Beth, 4. I do not have a photo of Beth, because I just got her. Beth's first trial was this past weekend, a challenge a best.

Rhett is a service dog, Raygan is on the mend from stem cell treatment due to arthritis.

Nice job capturing some special moments, though I'm not really a fan of strong vignette technique.

I grew up with a Border Collie named Lassie (she came with the name and it was years before the TV series). We got her in England when she and I both were 3 years old and she returned to the U.S. with us, at a time when few people knew very much about Borders here. She was sheep-trained and herded me when I was a tyke. Living in Montana, we had lots of offers for her - such as to trade one dog for several horses - from cattle and sheep ranchers there. But we would never trade her. She stayed with us and lived a full, rich 18 years.

She was smart! Smart! Smart! They're supposedly the smartest dog breed and I truly believe it!

Except when it came to skunks and porcupine, which she always felt it was her obligation to chase.... no matter how many times she got sprayed, stuck or found herself hanging from a barbed wire fence by her tail!

Our Lassie had two litters, 19 pups total, before we returned from England with her (where she was "fixed" ). As Americans, we got in trouble with the locals who came for the pups, because my parents named them King, Prince, Queenie, and similar. The Brits were upset about dogs named after royalty! I'm pretty sure they changed the pups names, first chance they got.

Lassie flew to the US ahead of us, along with a half-dozen other dogs on an Air Force cargo plane. Halfway across the Atlantic, someone in the crew thought the dogs should stretch their legs and let them all out of their cages... at the same time. I heard that made for some excitement, all those dogs running amok (and doing other things, I'm sure) in the airplane!

By the way, many Border Collies today (my nephew and his wife have two, and a rancher friend has a couple) don't look very like they did in England in 1960. As I recall, back then they were more black all over, with fewer and smaller white markings, and often had longer coats than many I see today. And I don't recall ever seeing any color other than black. I guess more color variety has been bred into them, in the many decades since.

That's also a wonderful B&W image! There is the story of a lifetime in her face and her slight smile seems very wise and knowing. It reminds me of Dorothea Lange and some other classic photographers' work.

Once I begin editing the photos, and having three border collies, of which one is 12,and my best friend for the past 12 years, it made me realize how immortal life is, and I begin to tear-up.Editing the images for this friend of mind. He wanted all black and white photos to be sent to him, but I did send him this one in color.

Thank you for your response

Thank you for your beautiful response about your border collie.

The border collies is the most intelligent dog, only the wolf and coyote are more intelligent in the canine world.

The black & white photo of the lady with the soft eyes, has an incredible story to tell and she did tell me some of it. She loved my border collie Rhett, I took Rhett with me when I was photographing street people in Seattle Washington and Victoria Canada. He broke the ice for me on many occasions

This picture really struck a nerve with me. I trained and exhibited Bulldogs for 27 years and have felt the emotion I see in your picture many times. I keep going back over and over to take a look at it. It is a keeper for sure and I bet it might earn you a ribbon or two in a contests......good job!

Thank you for those warm comments, and your photo of your beautiful border collie.

As a handler and owner of three border collies, I'm especially aware how much they mean to me and others handlers I see and know at the sheepdog trials i participate in. I do not know anyone, who is not a professional handler, that does not have the same emotions when one of their dogs reach the age, where time is short.

We do everything we can to keep them healthy while they are on this earth.
