New Mexico Desert

I spent a few days in New Mexico, Red River to be exact. It gave me a chance to take a few shots of the desert not far from Taos. Fairly late in the day so I had some pretty nice light and lots of beautiful clouds. The New Mexico sky was just beautiful. My youngest son is in one of the photos and has used some of his shots in a showing in Dallas. I hope you enjoy.

Welcome to New Mexico! I notice on your third photo it says "tone mapped." I have to ask, what is that? I'm assuming it is something done in PP?

It was done in Photomatix Pro. It's a combination of five photos using what they call their tone mapping process.

Is that just another name for high dynamic range (HDR), or something different?

It's the same thing. Photomatix had a free program or you can get the Pro program for not too much. The free one has a watermark across it but you can see what it's like. The pro version removes the watermark. It will not only combine and align like photos but you can come up with some pretty interesting abstracts by combining different night shots. You can go mild or completely wild with some creative presets that you can modify.

There is nothing quite like the NM sky.
