Nice shot
Yellow garden spider---Yes----can bite, but not dangerous to humans
We have them too---they like to spin in the tomato plants.
I do not like any spiders, but these are photogenic!!!!

Black and Yellow Argiope Spider female, AKA Garden Spider. the males are very small. The females get large and are great posers. Recently I shot a video of one in my garden wrapping up a Brown Paper Wasp.

Keep a look out for a male.

Yup ... Garden spider. Had a bunch of them living in a blackberry patch on the farm where I grew up. When it came time to pick my father would lower me down in the bucket of a bucket loader tractor so I wouldn't have to deal with them. They give me the Willies! I would rather run butt naked through a patch of nettles than tangle with some garden spiders.

Are you considering the use of a true macro lens? If so, there are several Canon macro-photographers on the True Macro-Photography Forum at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html that can provide guidance in evaluating macro lenses.

Hurray! Someone else is being invaded with spiders & catching them with their camera. I posted one yesterday that caught my attention......same Yellow garden spider. If you take a look you will find a Wikipedia attachment that someone placed on my page that really explains everything very well. Welcome to The Spider Club!! I saw another one out there also!! Bob

Strangely its common name is "Black and Yellow Garden Spider"

or more officially (looked this up, I knew common but not this one)
Argiope aurantia
