I couldn't seem to get it's back in critical focus.

Black and Yellow orbweaver (Argiope aurantia): http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/black_and_yellow_argiope.htm
You are just slightly back-focused, so the spider leg hairs and victim are sharp, but the abdominal pattern is just a bit soft.

I agree about the focus and appreciate the identification! I think we just call them garden spiders.

Are you manually focusing, or using Auto-Focus? Which camera? Which lens?

Super light and composition. I love your inclusion of all the zig-zag webbing this spider is famous for.

Sony a6000 w/55-210 at the long end. I used manual focus and I think I used f9 and 1/350. Not sure about ISO. Did use a tripod but a slight wind kept spider moving a little.

Long lenses will work, but you will encounter a maddeningly narrow DoF. I understand about webs in the wind. This is one reason why I like to photograph spiders early in the morning, before breezes set-in.

That's a good idea. I keep toying with getting a macro lens but am not sure I would gain a whole lot. Your thoughts?

Thanks, Linda. I wish I could spend more time in your fair state for photo opportunities!

In order to capture your above image with a macro lens focal length of 100mm or 105mm, your Working Distance (lens front element to subject) would be about 12-inches. To capture a true 1:1 mag macro-photograph, Minimum Working Distance is 6-inches. Long lenses work for large insects and large spiders, but not well for smaller critters. You need to decide a comfortable Working Distance for you.
