Shopping in the seaside town of Southport - used to be one of the finest examples of Victorian style shopping areas in the country - now withe the increasing advance of betting, mobile telephone and charity shops filling units left empty due to economic recession it is losing some of it's traditional charm.

I think I'd feel a bit cheated to find Starbucks there on my first visit to England. Like when I saw a McDonald's in Paris :)

Well I delight in seeing things from the UK. Your spot on...lots of old quaint shops have given way to loan offices, borrowing money and such. Here in the US, many area's are in severe decline...lots and lots of abandoned businesses, lots of decay. So very sad, I worry about our future.

I admit that I had much the same reaction when I noticed the Starbucks sign. It did resurrect a memory for me though from the early 70's when I attended a conference at Imperial College in London. I like a little cream or milk in my coffee and at the conference I found that they percolated the "white" coffee with the milk already in it. It was definitely an acquired taste for me.

Thanks MattPhox - I get equally frustrated when I see Costa taking over our traditional coffee shops and pumping out their formulaic offerings - and it seems the only coffee in town these days is that awful illy brand.
I remember years ago when I was in the beautiful city of Exeter, Devon and came upon late in the evening after a conference one of my favourite buildings and was horrfied to find it had ben converted into a McDs.
