No cropping. Cat was too big for 1:1 magnification on DX format, and might be too big for 1:1 on FX format.

When photographing people, animals, and insects, the eyes must always be in focus. Image #2 is back-focused from eyes. Are you manually focusing, or relying on Auto-Focus? (Helpful suggestions to follow your answer)

I used to manually focus, but discovered that my A-F macro lens was more precise than my aging eyes.
Now, I place the subject's eyes in a small central spot on my viewfinder, and successfully rely on Auto-Focus.

Most macro-photographers manually focus, which usually requires more ambient light than needed for A-F.

I'll have to give that a try. I tried to use A-F on a spider in a web and it could not focus on it. so I dropped the idea.

Small central focusing spot is the key. You will find this option in your camera menu.
