Recently I received ad ad from a camera store selling Lens Bumpers made by DeluxGear. They look interesting but do they really work?

They look more like another unnecessary gimmick to me.
After looking at them, if they are even necessary, of which I am not convinced, one could achieve the same thing with some stiff sheets of foam and a couple of large rubber bands.

In case you don't know it the lens hood is a bumper.
Next someone will try to sell you a lens shade.
thanks for the feedback, I kinda thought so. In 35 years of taking pictures I've only broken one UV filter when I banged the lens.

I Googled Lens Shades, I'm interested in buying on those. Turns out I have a bunch. Turn out it's just another name of Lens Hood.

They work. But a collapsible rubber lens hood works just as well for less money.

Looks like an interesting solution to a non-existent problem.
Contrary to popular opinion a lens bumper is not just a hood. It serves a purpose.
Just remember that you need to use it with custom camera body armor also.
It's used to protect everything in a ruff environment. Kind of like wearing gloves on your hand.
I've got body armor for one camera but very seldom use it. Obviously it won't protect against stupidity but it works well when climbing around mild hills.

Thanks for the feedback. I also have "body armor" for the d800 and also seldom use it.

Origionally I picked it up for a field trip. Now days when I "almost" need two cameras and bring a second for the heck of it for things in a ruff environment, I like the feeling of my camera hanging on a strap, swinging by my side, and having some kind of protection while it's not used. Probably 99% of the time its not. Most times I do what is normal and just swap lenses.
Several years ago at a wedding I had two cameras loaded for bear. I ended up breaking the flash mount when I didn't pay attention walking past a table. It really wasn't that hard of a hit either.
Oops. Deleted. Meant to post in a different thread.
Seems to me that these are just soft rubber lens hoods. I doubt that they would protect any better than a lens hood and at the same time you end up stuck with more gear to carry into the bush.
It makes me wonder if maybe a bicycle inner tube might be a solution too.
