Yes, I know that sounds like a ridiculous title, but try to find 1/8" thick aluminum 4" X 4" or 4" X 8". Online got me nothing, so I'm trying a big surplus place in town tomorrow - or maybe later today. I found plans for a time lapse camera rotator, and I have everything (on order) but the top and bottom plates - the main body. Since drilling, tapping, and countersinking are involved, I can't substitute wood or plastic. I'm going to feel mighty foolish with $100 worth of parts and no way to mount them.

Sounds like you got the cart before the horse syndrome. I know what your saying, I've done it myself. You plan on doing something and you get ahead of yourself so to speak.

Maybe you could mount 2 -2in. pieces together ?? You can get 2X1/8 bar stock at Lowes or some Ace Hdw. I have a sheet metal shop in town where I get all my odd-ball size stuff cut to order .....

Is this what you are looking for, Jerry. It also comes in thicker stock. http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=8027&step=4&showunits=inches&id=748&top_cat=60

Have you tried the Yellow Pages under metal suppliers?

And sometimes scrap yards will sell you odds and ends for the weight alone.

My problem is I like thicker stock, and Lowe's or Home Depot just don't believe anything thicker than 1/8" exists. :hunf:

I work in a machine shop. Go online and find metal supply companies in your area. Some people have already mentioned Grainger. They are a huge supply company. When you get aluminum try to get 6061 or 7075 aluminum. Aluminum such as 2024 and 5052 is soft and gummy. It can stick to and gum up your drill bits. If you need a stronger threads you can install stainless steel helicoil inserts. Helicoils require a special tool to install.

Thanks for that. All the 1/8" I found yesterday was marked "Unavailable."

I found a 5" x 12" piece at the surplus shop - $4.00.

Thanks. I found three locally, but the surplus shop had what I needed.
