The expression "be careful what you wish for" never rang more true than when we went to photograph Herbert Lake at first light. We arrived an hour too early because Alberta isn't on our DST. We waited in the dark taking occasional shots waiting for the big burst of morning sun on the peaks. Well, that didn't happen--not that day anyway. Mist and low clouds hung around well past sunrise. But the resulting images are worth more to me than anything I could have asked for. And, as we stood in the dark looking through the mist, we heard the lone voice of a loon as it skimmed across the lake, barely discernible to our eyes. When we returned many days later under cloudless skies, the magic of the moment was gone.
Really nice photos that make me want to make a similar trip some time. I totally agree with your note at the base of your posting about your goal being " - to see all I can while I can!"

RS, of all the places I've traveled in 10+ years, the Canadian Rockies are at the top of my list--in fact, this trip was a return after my first introduction to the region in 2005. "To see all I can while I can" is becoming more pressing each year. Finding a photographer/travel companion is even harder. I am so lucky to have made two trips--this and a trip to NE Oregon and SE Washington last year--with my friend Sam. Traveling with someone who shares the same enthusiasm for the scenery makes it so much more rewarding.
These are absolutely stunning images. I grew up in the Colorado Rockies but have wanted to visit the Canadian Rockies for some time now. Maybe sometime in the future I will have the opportunity. At least I have the equipment now to capture a trip like that well.

Beautiful set - I like both the misty first pictures and the very clear latter part - very well done!

It makes me happy that the scenery moved you the way it did me, Andrea. This was a return to the Canadian Rockies after 10 years and I can appreciate your comment about going with the right equipment. I sure hope the trip materializes for you--it's quite different from the Colorado Rockies because there are so many more sources of water to provide river gorges, glaciers, waterfalls, and lakes galore.
