These were all hand held. Not a problem. Much better than the sport version I am sure. Not sure about hiking a few miles with it though!!

I have a shot of all 4 vultures spreading their wings at the same time. They only did it when I got close so I thought it was a defense mechanism but I have learned as you said that they were warming up their bodies in the warm morning sun after a chilly night.

Squirrel - 8 feet, 1/250, f/6.3, ISO 800, 600 mm
Buzzards - 50-60 feet, 1/320, f/9, ISO 200, 600 mm
Sea Gull - 12 feet, 1/200, f/9, ISO 800, 600 mm

all Hand held, distances are best guesses
