I've Researched several lens that I am interested in buying and would like feedback from UHH members...on usage, sharpness, overall Performance ( I also looked at Ken Rockwell, and got his opinion )
1. Nikon 80-400mm VR "D" lens.... or
2. Sigma 150-500mm OS lens

My usage would be for wildlife, landscape, sports

Thanks for any "hands-on" Opinions...!

I have the Sigma 150-500 which I use on a Nikon D7000. I am very satisfied with it.

Nikon 80-400mm AF-s G VR, not the "D", it's auto focus is slow for wild life or sport, but is much cheaper than the AF-s G.

According to Rockwell, Sigma and Tamron are "junk" lenses.....He started out as a Nikon snob and has never quite gotten over it - although he does now see the values in Canon, Sony and Tokina .....Maybe in the next 20 years or so sometime he will see the value in Sigma and Tamron !

Nikon or Sigma---recommendations will be based on the lens that one owns; and most don't own both.
Not the subject, but Rockwell's flavor of the month is Canon over Nikon.

I use a Sigma 150-500 and it is OK.
At 500mm and wide open it is a little soft but ok, for web and prints up to 10x8 when used around f8/f11. Focus speed is OK but not super fast. It is not as good as lens as the Canon 100-400 (I am a Canon shooter).

Actually, I use The Sigma 100-300 f4 with Tamron SP 1.4X ( gives 420mm f5.6 ) the most on my Canons. I recommend it highly. The Nikon versions have HSM in the lens. Several on ebay - about $450-550 usually.

BigEasy,

I just went through this and bought the 80-400 Vr and a 1.4 TC after selling my Sig 150-500 which was fine. I just wanted something a little better.

Patience will reveal many reviews and lots of good advice here on the sight. I had to decide what the majority of my use would be and keeping that in mind I did a lot of research and listed my choices in the order I would purchase the ones I was really interested in if I could buy all of them. Then I had to decide how much money I did not mind parting with. Keep in mind that if something really stands out and it's within your budget decision range, and you purchase something else, chances are you won't be happy in the long run. Buyer's remorse is not good. I almost scrapped the new idea and went with Imagemeister's recommendations, very simple and affordable with some patience.

Best of luck! Don't confuse yourself too many times!
