I have been considering a purchase of a Panasonic DMC-LX5. I was wondering if any of our members had any experience with this camera, and if so what were their impressions of it?

Have not used it myself, but know a local pro here who has one she loves for times when she doesn't want to haul around a big camera. She says she has been quite impressed with it. You might also check out the indepth review of it on dpreview.com

I have one of these and absolutely love it! My other camera is a Canon 60D and I have a full range of great lenses for it but the LX-5 is my first choice for carrying around. The Leica lens is very sharp and the camera is much handier to carry than a big DSLR. My wife and I are going to the Big Island of Hawaii in week and it will be the Panasonic that goes with me. I will be shooting in RAW to allow for optimum post production tuning. My only complaint so far is that the lens cap got lost and I can't find a new one. I am always carrying the camera and therefore use it a lot more. Here are two shots of window displays in a local mall to give you an idea of the quality of this little camera.

Thanks Shaun. What you said and the pics have me pretty well convinced it is what I will buy. I have researched it quite a bit and downloaded the manual for it. I still think the best review is from the person that owns one.

Hi there,
Yes, I bought it about two years ago and love it. The manual is not too good but it has lots of help online. Batteries are rather expensive so you may want to compare these costs. There is a LX5 group on Flicker that has numerous pictures. I quite enjoy seeing how the camera can be used and learn from those with more skill.

My wife has one and we both absolutley love it. It is small and fits in your pocket easily. My only complaint is that it has no range finder but I understand there is one available for it but it's quite expensive. I highly recommend this camera.

Thank you for replying. I have looked up the viewfinder and found that it can be purchased for about $150.00. So far most comments are very positive so I think there is probably an LX-5 in my immediate future. I wanted something light with some manual settings. Arthritis has gotten to the point where hauling a DSLR around just plain isn't fun anymore. I was thinking of a 4/3 rds camera but then I am back to haulinng lenses again. Granted they are smaller but I am really working at lightening up the load as much as possible.

You may look into a Nikon P7100. It has a viewfinder and zoom lens (27-200mm). Sell for under $400 or you can get last years closeout for $229, This one is called the Nikon P7000. I had one and loved it. Made enlargements up to 16x20, no problem. BV

Hi, I have the Lumix DMC-ZS1 and I Love it. Very versatile, easy to use once you practice awhile with it.

I switched from my old 35mm NikonFM to my current kit of four Panasonics- FZ30 (which I keep for it's Leica zoom) TZ7 for my pocket, and two others: G10 body with an old zoom Tamron 70-210 (140-420 on 4/3) and latest G3 which is extremely versatile and light/compact with it's 14-42 zoom.
Great cameras! -the manuals though are pretty poor...Makes no difference to me as I use two of these models in full manual mode- which is great fun- and keeps you that bit sharper and nostalgic at the same time!!

Absolutely! I am no where near professional, and you are fortunate to have all that gear!
