I can't seem to get my crop tool to have the square shape it normally does when i am cropping. I just has and x-shape to the tool. Is there a way to reset this or what the heck! CS5
Thanks, Frank
The tool that I normally call the "Crop Tool" looks like two try-squares, where the "legs" are overlapping each other.
If that's the tool you're referring to, have you tried resetting that tool, or even all tools?
I use Photoshop Elements, but imagine that Photoshop is probably similar: In the area below the work-area, is an icon that looks like four tiny lines with a down-arrow to the left. Select the tool you want to reset and click on that and select "Reset Tool" or "Reset All Tools"
yea, i don't no what the heck is going on but, it's awful irritating. I've tried to reset the tool palete and can't figure, I recently have been trying to get photoshop updates and some them i've had to go and manually download them and there is no more fone support for CS5. Thank u for ur input. If you think of anything else please don't hesitate and send me the info.
Thanks Very much.

Post a screen capture of what you are seeing.

Frank, I find the crop tool in CS5 to be confusing, restrictive and nonintuitive unless just using marquee selection and then crop.
I find it much easier and natural to use the crop tool in ACR before you go into Photoshop.
The crop tool in Photoshop is size related, the one in ACR is ratio related.
If I have given any incorrect information here, anyone can feel quite free to correct me.

Not incorrect, but (and I know I'm treading on dangerous ground, by assuming that the crop tool CS and PSE are the same) incomplete.
When I select the crop tool, I can select "No restriction" or an Aspect Ratio. I have no problem with those, as I know how to use them.
However, I could also choose "Custom" and then type in the actual measurements, as 15cm x 10cm or 12 inches x 8 inches, or whatever.
The grid of the selected size also has the handles, same as the crop tool does, so that the grid can be enlarged or reduced to "tweak" the actual selection for the given size.
As with using the crop tool for an aspect ratio selection, the final number of pixels depends on how much of the image you select, and just because you set the measurements to 8x10inches, then select a part of a photo that's only 4x6 inches to begin with, you will still not end up with a sufficient number of pixels to print a good photo at 8x10 inches.
Sounds like your caps lock is on.
Do you have the "shift lock" on?
Sorry meant the "cap lock."

The crop tool in Photoshop goes either way, you just have to set it up the way you want!

Can you explain it to us to get it to work like it does in ACR?
Ben Willmore ... I'm just sayin' ... he explains all the silly little things that hang you up.
