Hi,

Really excited that I am going to China and will have the opportunity to take photos of the above .
Anyone been there ? can you suggest a suitable focal length please .
I have read that photographs are allowed but that you can't get close and don't want to lose out on a one off opportunity for me. Although if I do miss out I ill just have to take it on the Quin (chin). Apologies.

From what I've heard, just don't aim your camera at anything military unless a guide says it is OK. Or it is a public parade or the like.

Hi,

Tried that at the Kremlin when there was a military parade, got manhandled by these hairy soldeiers , got to say they were very badly turned out , crumpled shirts , dirty shoes and they were shocked when I manhandled them back , thankfully my wife pulled me away but my temper was getting the better of me . Wont do that in China , they are liable to shoot you and send your family the bill for the bullet

I waa there about twenty years ago and at they time you viewed them from a platform about twenty feet above them.i would suggest you use a zoom lens, to allow wide angle vies of the rather large army and at least a 90 mm to zoom in for some close ups.

I had a great time in China, people are really friendly its a bit hard getting used to every one staring at you. worth learning a little mandarin even just basic words for , thank you, your welcome, pork pies, etc food can be a bit tricky once you get of the main tourist tracks but :hot pot is good, use common sense when photographing had a great time best holiday I have had. ps if you don't use chop sticks take a set of plastic knifes & forks or you can buy them once you arrive.

Hi,

Thanks, sound like my 70-200 f4 will do , was going to just take my trusty 24-70, but looks like its another lens and possibly with a 1.4 converter. Was the light good enough for f5.6 without having to raise the ISO to silly levels?

Hi ,

Totally agree with you , it does not take much to learn some basics in the local language wherever you visit.
Used to chopsticks but very slow, good idea to take the cutlery. Thanks

Again, Iwasthere about 20 years ago the lighting may have changed, but was about the same light as you would find in a museum. You should be able to shoot at a reasonable ISO.

That sounds like sense. Trouble is that I snore very loudly and all the people around me prod and poke me to make up. They never seem very friendly either after that .

I was there about 4 years ago and you could shoot anything you wanted. You are on a large walkway all around the arena. I think you'll be surprised at the size of it when you first walk in. Pretty sure I used a 28-300 there to get the group shots and also get right in close on an individual face.
