Several years ago, my brother-in-law gave me this old Savage M99 take-down rifle in .300 Savage caliber. His father bought the rifle, brand new, in 1937! It has been on two actual hunting trips. The rest of the time, it resided in his closet!

Occasionally, I take it out and shoot it just to be sure it's "healthy." It shoots like gang busters!

These old take-down models are fairly rare, especially one that's this clean.

I thought some of you gun enthusiasts might enjoy taking a look at it.

At one time, I owned one.... but in a fit of insanity, I sold it! I also had a Winchester 95 in .30-40 Krag!

I always loved the older model 99's. That beautiful brass rotary Mannlicher magazine on the early ones was a work of mechanical art. I had a friend that had a 1937 take down model 99 in 250-3000 Savage that I used to shoot on occasion. It seemed a coincidence that both guns were bought that same year. It must have been a lavish expenditure in those depression days. Thanks for bringing back some fond teenage memories.

What a beautiful piece. I especially like the hand checkering on the forearm and grip.

I agree, the checkering looks like it was just cut. Beautiful specimen.

Good Morning, my dad had one of these rifles, every year during deer season, he would let me carry and shoot if the situation arises. It is a beautiful gun, it was always cleaned and oiled after a hunt, regardless if it needed it. I really liked it. Shot spot on killed several deer and pigs, never dropped. Then, my dad's house was broken into and took all the pistols and rifles, this is the only rifle that was never found. And Life goes on.
That is a beautiful piece of gun smithing.

I had an older Savage as my first deer rifle, but one of my hunting buddies had a take down model, like yours. His got plenty of action and was well worn. He recently passed away. I don't know where it ended up.

Just saw the rifle in Badlands with Martin Sheen, a rifle rarely seen in this area, especially in the take down model. Great rifles, sorry to say I've never owned or shot one. Your model looks well cared for, congrats!
