Why not simply ask the friend how well it worked for him ? unless you don't trust him enough

turn off the IS on your current lenses and shoot.
Are your images satisfactory?

Do what everyone did until IS came along.
Hold steady, use a tripod, use high shutter speeds.
In fact on a tripod or high shutter speed you are supposed to turn IS off anyway. It can create blur trying to clear up movement that isn't there.
I never even had a lens with IS until a few years ago.

I use the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens and it is a great lens, both optically and mechanically, in reasonable light levels. If not in reasonable light levels you will need to use a tripod (+ remote controller) and/or very high ISO values.

Yup. (30 years without IS.)
Elbow on stomach, lean against something, hold breath,...
And I STILL do it.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 70-200 f/4 lens. I have one and use it all of the time. It's easily handheld-I rarely use mine on a tripod, unless I use the 1.4 TC with it. It's an excellent lens and you won't be sorry if you buy it.

I would by that lens in a minute. You can probably get it for a good price and love it. I own that lens 70 to 200 2.8 L non is and love it. I shot my own daughters wedding with it. I also shot my nieces wedding with it and had no problems. That was a few years ago and found I do not need to upgrade the lens.

About three years ago I wanted the white Canon 70-200 f2.8L lens for sports photography and chose the non-IS. Absolutely love it. Got mine as a barely-used lens for $1100 and couldn't be happier. Would NOT consider paying about $1000 more for IS. Curious how much you can get this lens from your friend?
